Should You Travel with Your Engagement Ring? And Where Shall You Not Wear It?

So many people and jewelers would advise you not to travel with your engagement ring and not to wear it to the beach, even though you would see many people wearing their engagement rings on the plane and on the beach. There are many factors to consider for removing your ring for certain activities, after all, A JEWELRY IS MEANT TO WORN, NOT HIDDEN IN A BOX IN YOUR CLOSET. So, let’s delve into the considerations surrounding this issue, exploring the potential risks and the peace of mind that comes with making an informed choice.

Obviously, the main reason why people suggest not travel with your ring is based on the possibly of losing it during travel, particularly in hotel rooms. However, there are other factors to consider. If your engagement ring is a million dollars and you don’t travel with security in your private jet, yes it might be smart to not travel with that. But then if you are a person who can afford a million dollars ring, then you can as well invest in a more budget friendly travel ring. And, if your ring is around the most common engagement ring price range, which is $5-10K, and you cannot afford to lose it for obvious reasons, I would highly recommend insuring your ring. Ring insurances are pretty affordable and I recommend Jewelers Mutual and Briteco. Notably, tales of lost engagement rings are not unheard of; some individuals have experienced this misfortune more than once. If absentmindedness and the propensity to misplace items resonate with you, go get your ring insured so that you will have a piece of mind.

On the other hand, some people never take their rings off. Like, literally… even when sleeping. Although, it is not recommended, if you are never taking your ring off, you are not likely to lose it. However, if you never take your ring off, your ring will be more likely to get damaged. Even with the strongest material on earth, diamonds, and with the highest quality of craftsmanship, your ring is NOT indestructible. So, having your ring insured is also handy for damages.

That said, let me be extra and give you more details on how to decide where to wear your ring or not. Because we love educating our customers 😊

There are some more factors to consider in deciding whether you should wear it to the beach or hand activity involving places. Number 1 is the material of your ring, and number 2 is the setting of your ring. Diamond is the hardest material on Earth and it ranks 10 on Mohs hardness scale whereas Emerald ranks 7.5 which makes it a soft stone and more prone to chipping and breaking. If the stone of your ring ranks less than 8 on Mohs scale, do not wear it for day-to-day activities. When it comes to setting, some settings are pretty fragile and more prone to bending and losing a stone. For example if your band it too thin, there is no basket that carries your stone, there are less than 4 prongs, and the corners of the stone (in emerald, radiant, pear, and marquise) are exposed, that means your setting is not too safe and strong and you should be extra careful.

So, after giving you all the details and suggestions about safekeeping your ring and making it a heirloom piece, it all comes to your decision to what to make with it.

Let me know what you think and if you wear your ring to travel and beach on comments 😊

 Love,

 Asli
